Values don't count for anything, if you do nothing.

Hello Reader,

This week I chose to write my essay in public.

A far-right politician addressed Australia in the last few days and called for this ancient, multicultural nation to become a monoculture. She called for the further marginalisation of transgender people and used people of Islamic faith as a vehicle for fear.

She was talking about my family. She was talking about my friends and she was talking about my values.

I realise in these moments that I am not interested in purpose-driven people who simply signal their values. I'm interested in what those people do when a moment like this tests them.

When racist ideas surface in our leadership, we have to name them for what they are and dismantle them through collective resistance in how we choose to lead, how we design and run our organisations, how we vote, where we donate, whose work we share, and whose voices we amplify.

This week, this weekly essay is public.
